Preventing weak passwords with automatic tests

Reported by: daniel Assigned to: free
Priority: low Milestone: 3.0
Component: packages Version:
Severity: normal Keywords: password cracklib

Description

I would like to include cracklib or something like it into the distribution. Ideally, when you boot a brand new 64 Studio machine from an OEM, you should get a prompt asking you to choose a root password, rather than having a default of 'root' or whatever like some installations do.

Then if you choose a weak password, you should get an error message like this: "That password is too easy to crack. Please choose another one that is 12 characters or longer, not based on a dictionary word, and contains numbers, punctuation marks or mixed case letters."

Remove the version property, would mean that the ticket is a issue referring to version 1.0 of 64 Studio, which does not exist yet.

Re-opening the ticket, it was erroneously closed by a commit in the trinity project repository.

cracklib is a good idea, but it would need integration with the Debian installer and the Gnome user admin tool to be effective. Postponing to the 3.0 release...
