Network lock-ups with certain hardware and 2.6.21-rt kernel

Reported by: daniel@… Owned by: free
Priority: high Milestone: 2.2
Component: packages Version: 2.0
Severity: major Keywords:

Description

Difficult to reproduce, only affects a limited range of hardware, and only when transferring files (pings are OK). Same hardware tests fine with the 2.6.19-rt kernel, so it looks like there's a regression there.

Does the new 2.6.22 kernel help?

Changed 14 months ago by daniel@…

  • version set to 2.0
  • milestone changed from 3.0 to 2.1

The problem I was having with my USB IRQ conflict may be related to this. I fixed this by disabling acpi for now. 2.6.22 _seems_ to be handling this sort of hardware conflict better. I'm not clear as to the root cause of these lockups and as they appear to be corner-cases, surely they will need to be evaluated case-by-case over time?

Will we see a newer kernel to solve these issues? It looks as if we have still some time on testing as the 2.1 tickets are still too many, and we have some blockers (like this one)

Ingo is already on 2.6.24, thus 2.6.23 should be ok?

Changed 8 months ago by daniel@…

  • priority changed from highest to high
  • severity changed from blocker to major

The problem has only been reported on two machines so far. Both had VIA mainboard chipsets and an RTL 8139 network card. Downgrading the severity to 'major' rather than 'blocker'.

  • milestone changed from 2.1 to 3.0

Will need a later kernel to fix properly.
